<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: 78%;"><strong>Two Radiant-cut Sapphires</strong></span></div>
<br />
<p>Designing a new ring, pendant or brooch is an exciting experience, a time of anticipation and imagination. One of my favorite steps in the process is comparing and selecting gemstones. Helping a client find the perfect gemstone for a design is almost as much fun as unveiling the finished jewel.</p>
<p>When selecting gemstones for a design several factors should be considered - the most important of which are color, cut and size. To help us discuss each of these factors I have posted above a photo of two radiant-cut sapphires from our inventory.</p>
<p>When evaluating colored gemstones the obvious first consideration is the color. Gemstones come in an amazing spectrum of colors that spans all the hues of the rainbow. Even among blue sapphires there is a great variety in shades ranging from light pastels to intense royal blues and violets. The two sapphires pictured above illustrate this colorful variety. The larger sapphire is a wonderful soft velvety blue while the smaller sapphire is a more intense shade of violet. When working on a project, I will often examine 20 or more gemstones before finding the one with just the right color for the jewel.</p>
<p>Cut is the second factor to consider. The cut of a gemstone should complement and enhance the beauty of a jewel. The two illustrated sapphires are wonderful examples of square radiant cuts. The radiant cut weds the classic step faceting of an emerald cut with the brilliant faceting favored by diamond cutters. The result is a wonderful marriage of elegance and sparkle that goes well with Art Deco-inspired designs and the flowing, geometric forms of Modern jewels.</p>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Radiant-Sapphire-Seduction-Ring.htm" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="202" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Radiant-Sapphire-Seduction-Ring3b.gif" width="450" /></a></div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: 78%;"><strong>Sapphire Seduction ring with 2.30-carat radiant-cut sapphire.</strong></span></div>
<br />
<p>A ring I recently created, <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Radiant-Sapphire-Seduction-Ring.htm">Sapphire Seduction</a>, illustrates the sparkling elegance of a radiant-cut sapphire. In another design, <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Purple-Decodence-Sapphire-Ring.htm">Purple Decodence</a>, I chose a classic emerald-cut sapphire, because the striking geometry of the purple gemstone beautifully complements the platinum setting.</p>
<p>Finally we consider size. First off, bigger is not always better when it comes to fine gemstones. A smaller, beautifully cut gemstone with exceptional color will almost always have a greater impact than a larger mediocre stone. What is important is that the size of the gemstone balances and complements the other elements of the jewel without overwhelming them. Keep Goldilocks in mind - "You don't want a gem that is too large or too small, you want one that is just right for the design!"</p>
<p>We have discussed color, cut and size which leads to the question "How do you evaluate and compare each of these factors as you search for the perfect gemstone?" The truth is there are no quick answers, no easy shortcuts. There is no simple formula that can determine what size of gemstone is best for a given design. Online photographs rarely capture the true beauty of a gem's color - they are subject to the accidents of photography and lighting. And although grading reports are helpful in sorting the clunkers from the candidates, they fall short in discriminating the finer qualities of cut.</p>
<p>The best approach is to bring together a collection of the finest gemstones available from various gem cutters. After examining each of the stones in my gemological lab, I then lay them out side-by-side and carefully examine and compare each stone first hand. Evaluating the gems in person, while working with my client, allows us to select the best gem for the jewel we are creating.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Great Pumpkin</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A Fancy Color Orange Sapphire</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">With autumn comes the leaves turning to golden yellow, rich orange and lush red hues. And, of course, we also have approaching the great annual tradition of All Hallows Eve (a.k.a. Halloween).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This time of year makes me think of some of the wonderful Orange Gemstones in our collection, especially a gorgeous Fancy Orange Sapphire we have nicknamed The Great Pumpkin.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Fine quality fancy orange sapphires are difficult to come by, especially when compared to other fancy color sapphires.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">What's so great about this <a href="http://jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Orange-Sapphire-313-ct-Cushion-cut-CS8530.htm" target="_blank">3.13 carats fancy orange sapphire</a> ? Just about everything of course ! First you have the extremely hard and durable nature of sapphire which is #9 on the Moh's scale of hardness. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Sapphire is the hardest of all colored gemstones which makes it a perfect choice for everyday wear.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Another great feature of orange sapphires......is the rich warm hue that goes beautifully with both yellow gold as well as platinum. This is the type of color that can easily look it's best in either metal.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And let's not forget that the Pantone 2012 color of the year is Tangerine Tango.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Need I say more? Okay....then I will.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Fancy Orange Sapphires like The Great Pumpkin shown above are the perfect color for redheads and brunettes. Did I mention that I am a redhead? I guess that makes me biased, but yes, this is still a gorgeous color that is worthy of an exceptional custom ring, brooch or necklace.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'm thinking it would look best in a stunning ring design, accented with colorless diamonds and perhaps some small fancy purple sapphires, but of course, any number of designs is possible.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">If you think this is a great stone for your loose gemstone collection or perhaps you would like to discuss a beautiful custom jewel project featuring this stunning gem, please <a href="mailto:Judi@JewelryExpert.com" target="_blank">send me an email</a>. I would love to help you create a magnificent jewel featuring one of my favorite gems.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Clients often ask me how I come up with a design. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Do I seek inspiration from a specific gemstone? </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Or do I have the design already in my mind and look for the best gem for that design? </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Do I take an existing design of mine and modify it to suit the needs and style of a specific client?</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Do I look to the past and study ancient and antique jewels, architecture, textiles, motifs and gather inspiration from historical designs?</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The answer is.....ALL OF THE ABOVE !</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I want to write about how a design progresses as I modify it to fit the needs of a specific client, to explain one example of how I create variations on a theme...and perhaps a new design all together.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A great example of a design that I have developed over the years and cultivated into other designs, is an early creation of mine, called Cool Ice.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://jewelryexpert.com/catalog/cd1-dr.htm" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgdsQo9YGR06J-2GlHs90RXsMeVexMazhFKvkROvxGLT5M8BN3k8gYlTtBDteH-LLK5_yJjoL02ITMUwLCsECN3yuYdu9bD0fo3fFDY86MZqoyIkiB7lAl7n-ExgtcnMC-zxbNgEqRvKi2/s320/cool+ice+34.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The first Cool Ice ring I made featured a fine grade 2 carat oval diamond (E, VS1), set low in four heavy gauge prongs, flanked by two trilliant cut diamonds burnish set flush within the shoulders of the band. The ring itself was a thick, heavy and brightly polished smooth band that was as wide as the base of the trilliant diamonds and tapered in width to form a gentle dome style ring.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The first client for whom I made this design is a brain surgeon so we often called this the Brain Surgeon Ring. The design quickly became quite popular on our website and resulted in many clients wanting their very own "Brain Surgeon's Ring" or something similar with variations.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I have made this design, many times, in all platinum with oval and trilliant diamonds (as shown above), and also in an 18ktyg and platinum combination with the same type of stones. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Later, I made this design with a round center diamond and trilliant side diamonds for clients that preferred round to oval.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So far, all of these were pretty similar concepts of the original design with just some minor tweeking here and there.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">One day, a client asked me to locate for him a nice round, larger size diamond. We talked about my Cool Ice design, but he wanted something a little different. I suggested a wider band, not tapered, with an inlay of rose gold, forming a stripe along the entire circumference. I also thought polishing the ring with a satin finish would produce a nice high-tech look. My client agreed and so </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">began the creation of yet another design: Roses and Satin.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Roses-and-Satin-Diamond-Ring-dr.htm" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="279" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN8NjjL3-ANuS2BpAwoVDj1blLturrZsPlKsUwFe0WnH2P6eo0paYAfny6uqEK9tLmqRzBGi8uGQQmA_0cnAu5oSdt7oKTxdTfWj0UI4Qev4ruHbtM-IBL3CAP8tcFyOOMwm62o01hOuLI/s320/Cool-Ice-Stripe2.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I love the stark combination of the platinum and rose gold stripe along with the soft satin finish we applied to the metal surface.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">But wait....I'm not done yet. There is more to the Cool Ice Design yet to be fashioned !!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">One day, a client approached me about my Cool Ice design, but his "fiance-to-be" loved sapphires. Since blue is her favorite color, he wanted to feature a rich blue oval sapphire in a ring based on our Cool Ice design. This was the beginning of my Cool Blue series.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Sapphire-Cool-Ice-Ring.htm" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO1VoXfhQCbSIWtq8zpbBsaJSoOoHE1Hh3ZxeJYb8HY8nvkN2y68piJL0HIJxTi-kw3gpFYU5vlItLgODyEYoY1xTOlU6TmJIVQPNq-f4YouGqMOzpqbcHnTwKPg-vG_h7IQkLUbfbol83/s320/Cool-Blue-Sapphire-Ring-J7416-15a.gif" width="311" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I have made Cool Blue many times, with a variety of gorgeous oval blue sapphires from 1 1/4 carats up to 4 carats. I have to admit that Cool Blue has now surpassed Cool Ice in terms of custom order requests, as more and more women are choosing sapphire for their engagement ring instead of the more traditional diamond.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Tanzanite-Yellow-Diamond-Ring-er.htm" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="219" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_k15weoJpp6CsFYTzioHxD-VZ0zraTUnDt2mGP5rsjjdth-sqyFAO3mf38WEW54AE7DhLMiQ0K1prL4or7ZnOs82Xj5mO-hgRT4OuM7wfbgEROI-kSYubhXHNlxWa6_aimxEfpy_Des3u/s320/horizontal-tanzanite2.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Cool Blue lead to another version called Horizontal Blue, when a young couple wanted an oval Tanzanite set horizontally. I chose fancy yellow side diamonds for this ring as yellow is a complementary color to blue-violet. I also suggested a sturdy bezel setting for additional protection to the Tanzanite which is not as hard as sapphire or diamond.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The original Horizontal Blue was made with a matching contoured wedding band. But I have also made matching contoured wedding bands for the Cool Blue and the Cool Ice rings. And don't miss the <a href="http://jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Horizontal-Blue-Sapphire-Ring.htm" target="_blank">Concave Facetted Horizontal Sapphire Ring</a> which is really striking or the <a href="http://jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Horizontal-Blue-Sapphire-Ring-1.htm" target="_blank">Mini Horizontal Blue</a> for a more diminutive look.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So what's next ? Horizontal Violet of course !</span><br />
<a href="http://jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Horizontal-Violet-Sapphire-Ring.htm" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><br /></a><a href="http://jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Horizontal-Violet-Sapphire-Ring.htm" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRJ4_UmVWCUs0Vc_WYMvgcprBORyBpSIMcccPm7abZhs7ExjAeI1B0qQ6vwa7uyXZOdYp-kes7htOXraBdVQP0BqBDujYfj425OzeOgie5bWcAyDGxdx8paKduK6-4Pf18j6ntkuvPu3e2/s320/Horizontal-Violet-Sapphire-Ring5.gif" width="320" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Many women love the colors Purple, Violet, Periwinkle and Plum. Fortunately, sapphires are available in all of these hues and therefore offer a wonderfully durable gemstone for an engagement or every day ring.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I could go on and on and on ! But I think you get the picture. The Cool Ice.....Cool Blue.....Horizontal Blue design can be made with oodles of variations to suit your personal style and taste.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Drusy is a term derived from the ancient Greek word "drossos" meaning "dew" which later evolved to the Bohemian "druza" and was then transformed by the Germans to druse. Some think of drusy as dew drops atop a mineral but I prefer to think of drusy like fine sugary crystals glistening as if freshly fallen snow on a cold winter morning.</span><br />
<br />
Drusy is basically a layer of micro-crystals (i.e. tiny tiny tiny) that have formed on the surface of a mineral or matrix.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKqj2Kp8zD2rB8EM_uQ7QHLuEa4twfsv-7Q2KSsw-u-RNrrAMKFuJoRjAPt_g9QK17GKKlfvqbdU8JBndiWZhaJchfwwoz4FvRTtK35P0vEyTDauYDFdKZ6UxUj-8LSPQJTPCQ-DVzswR2/s1600/CS5716-chrysocolla11b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKqj2Kp8zD2rB8EM_uQ7QHLuEa4twfsv-7Q2KSsw-u-RNrrAMKFuJoRjAPt_g9QK17GKKlfvqbdU8JBndiWZhaJchfwwoz4FvRTtK35P0vEyTDauYDFdKZ6UxUj-8LSPQJTPCQ-DVzswR2/s1600/CS5716-chrysocolla11b.jpg" /></a></div>
<span style="background-color: white;">It can be seen on a variety of colors of Quartz (white, orange, yellow, blue, mauve, etc.) found world wide, as well as on vivid green Uvarovite Garnet from Russia, hot pink Cobaltocalcite from the Congo, bright turquoise colored Chrysocolla from the Southwestern United States, Brazilian Rainbow Hematite, deep black Psilomelane from Germany and Irridescent Pyrite from Russia. </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4UvfxHC9vWC8nvxh96yjsWY33gHpEoc5hsQLv27pO1eEPBYQAcpM-HrvRbZGiTVQVQ67l-GpjZyWH9DgYtU0xMSy8q-wgQbLlywDaoK5yT-HW2IwdHkQBepC-KFuW7Bf3QrM714Y_L-wy/s1600/CS5716-chrysocolla4b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4UvfxHC9vWC8nvxh96yjsWY33gHpEoc5hsQLv27pO1eEPBYQAcpM-HrvRbZGiTVQVQ67l-GpjZyWH9DgYtU0xMSy8q-wgQbLlywDaoK5yT-HW2IwdHkQBepC-KFuW7Bf3QrM714Y_L-wy/s1600/CS5716-chrysocolla4b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
From the side, you can see the undulating depth of this lush drusy chrysocolla and the banded layers of malachite forming the side walls. Chrysocolla and Malachite are both copper based minerals that often occur together in the same matrix. Combine the rich copper generating hues of these two gems with a glittery, sugary layer of drusy and you have a spectacular prize. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">These dynamic earrings feature Drusy Uvarovite Garnets and took home first place in a design competition.</span><br />
If you look closely, you will see that the surface is encrusted with dodecahedron-shaped crystals in various sizes. This occurs because Garnet crystallizes in the Isometric (Cubic) system which typically presents as dodecahedron external shapes. The intense green is caused by Chromium.<br />
<br />
When purchasing uvarovite, look for specimens that have good surface coverage (no bare spots), intense color and well formed crystals.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Surprisingly, almost all of these materials are natural, even the vivid colors seen in Chrysocolla, Uvarovite and Cobaltocalcite. These truly are nature's wonders !</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Cobaltocalcite gets its super hot pink coloring from Manganese.<br />
<br />
I would call these "hot hot hot ! "<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD2Nb98x9aCEwqzrSG3ifEE28SFJCYnIjTMOZLXB2vbBUn8SSUZHm1WkfVq2rKyAfCPmbru7i00I-rSYqEWjzzW0tfEXel4jYVUwhWhuZpQagRhqfAo34hYdN-3uzaxIWFp7bC9nX2Kotv/s1600/irridescent-pyrite-tongue1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD2Nb98x9aCEwqzrSG3ifEE28SFJCYnIjTMOZLXB2vbBUn8SSUZHm1WkfVq2rKyAfCPmbru7i00I-rSYqEWjzzW0tfEXel4jYVUwhWhuZpQagRhqfAo34hYdN-3uzaxIWFp7bC9nX2Kotv/s320/irridescent-pyrite-tongue1.gif" width="184" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Irridescent Pyrite has a natural metallic shimmer of vibrant hues that remind me of exploding colorful fireworks ! The intensity of the hues is mesmerizing.<br />
<br />
<br />
This assymetrical tongue with sweeping bands of color would be dazzling as the centerpiece of a custom necklace. I can envision a warm yellow gold frame along the body of the pyrite with a curved line of facetted rainbow gemstones forming a cross-arm at the top, culminated by a round brilliant diamond as if to mark an exclamation !<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Of course there are endless possibilities for a custom jewel featuring this exotic gem. I see this irridescent pyrite set in 18kt yellow gold, brightly polished. But a cool white platinum design with satin finish would be equally striking. You can easily let your imagination wander with gems like this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
There are also some forms of drusy that are treated.<br />
Titania is drusy on quartz that has been coated with Titanium to create vibrant rainbow colors. Black onyx drusy is quartz drusy that has been dyed.<br />
<br />
And yes, there is even drusy that is coated with 23 karat gold or platinum.<br />
<br />
Will wonders never cease ?<br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">One of the reasons I love drusy gemstones is that they are available in such a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors. I am able to create truly unique jewelry with these glistening wonders ! Here is a gorgeous Titania coated drusy gemstone I used for a striking custom necklace. This Titania Agate has a metallic blueish border surrounding a pocket of glowing micro-crystals in vibrant purples, blues and yellows.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">I designed a pendant for this Titania Agate with a highly polished platinum frame that follows the natural contours of the gem. </span><br />
<br />

Of course mixing various drusy colors and gem types is permissible. These fabulous earrings showcase a pair of pie shaped vibrant rainbow hematites atop drusy yellow quartz trilliums. The round facetted rhodolites compliment the pink hues in the rainbow hematite. <br />
<br />
These gems and much more are available in our gallery for purchase. I work with a wonderful assortment of drusy gems that can be incorporated into a custom jewel of your liking. You can choose from a great number of colors for the combination that best fits your style. <br />

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Yes, it has been a while since I last wrote. I have had to focus my attention on other areas of my business for the last many months. But I am now back to writing about one of my favorite subjects - Fine Jewelry and Gemstones. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">And so, I bring you...... Alexandrite, The True Changer ! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Alexandrite is a unique gemstone that displays a <i>phenomenon</i> called Photochroism or Color-Change effect. Due to the popularity of this particular feature, this is also known as the Alexandrite effect even when seen in other types of gemstones. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">A fine Alexandrite will display one color under natural daylight and a different color under artificial or incandescent light.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAUoMvr48AQ9MBx1PQIBvO2BGdiYn97pPh4gBGLficKGIE7-5EgRFDzVRaHVShhXZvqpYfhXEzNsjoUjqJNGM2oKVeu02hQNzPyiF7pZrH7SEA_23-bprJKMPw55XkODk89cV_Q4aJCbPx/s1600/Daylight-layout1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="119" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAUoMvr48AQ9MBx1PQIBvO2BGdiYn97pPh4gBGLficKGIE7-5EgRFDzVRaHVShhXZvqpYfhXEzNsjoUjqJNGM2oKVeu02hQNzPyiF7pZrH7SEA_23-bprJKMPw55XkODk89cV_Q4aJCbPx/s400/Daylight-layout1.gif" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Alexandrite responds specifically to different wavelengths of light, resulting in a range of hues, depending on the quality of the gem. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Under daylight, Alexandrite can exhibit lush green hues, as well as greens modified by blue to create a deep teal hue and yellowish-greens modified by brown.
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimv79RptthaN_DxLM51Pev0EoL3G9VXBfB4ZdiZTdSo9SFCEWK3Z_hPuVKGlUO1_pAiJ6859QKgbYDZMrJVe0VNTALEUVeyf92qkqXHslh91MnUJpfiAU2ax0aGysHAw5zkjQShn_F2Nc5/s1600/Incandescent-layout1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="131" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimv79RptthaN_DxLM51Pev0EoL3G9VXBfB4ZdiZTdSo9SFCEWK3Z_hPuVKGlUO1_pAiJ6859QKgbYDZMrJVe0VNTALEUVeyf92qkqXHslh91MnUJpfiAU2ax0aGysHAw5zkjQShn_F2Nc5/s400/Incandescent-layout1.gif" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Under incandescent light, Alexandrite may display a dark red hue, a purplish-Red color or a brownish-pink.
The deeper and more vibrant the colors, the finer the gem. And....the stronger the amount of color change, the rarer the gem. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The strength of color change combined with the purity and vibrancy of the hues are <b>THE</b> most important characteristics in determining the value of natural Alexandrite.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1Cj3-vZG-9NlCbHffcarLtf0p-vTtREhejzr8rEv2kDQ8OCcgefEi708CcW3Gn_V2qX_gxT9xObjM7FOggJSMXPo8txZqyoE3VkmAVfzmFHUyBqRA17cgmLtpxlwwE1X_NRpytgO-i5Lw/s1600/Alexandrite-Pala3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1Cj3-vZG-9NlCbHffcarLtf0p-vTtREhejzr8rEv2kDQ8OCcgefEi708CcW3Gn_V2qX_gxT9xObjM7FOggJSMXPo8txZqyoE3VkmAVfzmFHUyBqRA17cgmLtpxlwwE1X_NRpytgO-i5Lw/s400/Alexandrite-Pala3.jpg" width="180" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Alexandrite also has a rich history that is tied to Russian Royalty.
In 1830, a poor peasant laborer discovered this unusual gem in a mine deep beneath the Ural Mountains of Russia. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Fascinated with the way the gem turned from green to red, he and others called it the Christmas Stone. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">This was also the time when a young Russian Tsarevitch, Alexander II, was celebrating his 12th birthday. As red and green were also the colors of the Tsarist Court, the stone was swiftly renamed Alexandrite.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiytKnnMjaGYJA1BsZchafIVuK7xLgXqll2he7MvgmxImrbS3a_8qoQBm6O56PwcZ7tIu48cPM-FaBt_5A_b8M6tWG4lKA4VAYVkbjJSsDjZ1gPQ9Ck0K3dHvu2bXR2mUyc0GQnoDtpLC-X/s1600/Alexandrite-Pala1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiytKnnMjaGYJA1BsZchafIVuK7xLgXqll2he7MvgmxImrbS3a_8qoQBm6O56PwcZ7tIu48cPM-FaBt_5A_b8M6tWG4lKA4VAYVkbjJSsDjZ1gPQ9Ck0K3dHvu2bXR2mUyc0GQnoDtpLC-X/s1600/Alexandrite-Pala1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Although the origin of alexandrite is shrouded in mystery, the beauty of this rare stone is undeniable. With proper cutting, the finest alexandrite exhibits a rich bluish-green in sunlight and a deep raspberry red in artificial light. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Unfortunately, the major Russian sources of alexandrite were depleted by the early 1900s.
More recently, deposits of alexandrite have been found in the gem-rich regions of Brazil. The finest Brazilian stones exhibit deep colors and exceptional clarity which rival the earlier Russian stones. It is the beauty of these fine Brazilian alexandrites that has generated a renewed interest in this phenomenal gemstone. </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">And if you did not already know, Alexandrite is considered a birthstone for those born in the month of June. Imagine that......a gem to commemorate your own birthday !</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />

Cards and candies are traditional gifts. There is also a long tradition of jewels from the past being given as an expression of one's feelings in the present and hopes for the future.<br /><br />The brooches and pins created 100 years ago are particularly appropriate for conveying the sentimental messages of Valentine's Day. They are laden with symbolic meanings and hidden messages favored during the late Victorian era and early 20th century. Below is a sampling of a few of our favorite brooches and stickpins from the <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Antique-and-Estate-Jewelry-Gallery.htm">Antique and Estate Jewelry Gallery</a>.<br /><br />So, if you are stuck on someone special or wish to brooch the subject of your intimate feelings, an antique stickpin or brooch may be the perfect Valentine's Day gift!<br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Art-Nouveau-Flora-Brooch-J9102.htm"><img border="0" alt="Art Nouveau Flora brooch. The Goddess's golden tresses are bestrewn with a bouquet of flowers and foliage. This brooch is beautifully rendered in the Art Nouveau style. Crafted in 10kt gold, circa 1900.</blockquote></div><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Krementz-Dogwood-and-Moon-Brooch-J9075.htm"><img border="0" alt="Art Nouveau dogwood and moon brooch. One form were rebus jewels in which elements of the jewel represented a word or phrase. For example small brooches with delicate enamel flowers set in a crescent moon, like this one, could be interpreted as "honeymoon."<p>The small dogwood blossoms beautifully crafted in pink and white enamel also held symbolic meaning. Among Victorians dogwood blossoms were a symbol of persistence as well as an indication of affection. Perhaps this brooch was a gift from a husband to his wife on their wedding night or at the time of their betrothal. Created by Krementz & Company in 14kt gold, circa 1900.<br /></p></blockquote><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Ostby-Grapes-and-Pearls-Brooch-J9077.htm"><img border="0" alt="Ostby & Barton grape leaf brooch. In Victorian times grapes and grape leaves were a symbol of Christ, but also carried overtones of Bacchus and riotous revelry. This week we are taking a look at one of the less celebrated, sometimes forgotten, estate jewels ... the stickpin.</p><p>In the 19th and early 20th centuries no sartorially resplendent gentleman would be seen without a stickpin to secure his cravat or tie. In the 21st century these elegant jewels are often seen gracing jacket lapels or the front of a hat. Below is a sampling of these wonderful diminutive jewels from the early decades of the last century.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Carter-Howe-Entwined-Serpent-Stickpin-J9083.htm"><img height="250" alt="Antique stickpin of entwined serpents guarding an amethyst. This example features entwined serpents with jealous green eyes guarding a regal purple amethyst. A small fresh water pearl is set above the serpents like a distant, full moon. Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1900.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Carter-Dragon-with-Sceptre-Stickpin-J9055.htm"><img height="260" alt="Stickpin with a fiery dragon protecting a golden sceptre. Here a fierce dragon is either protecting or impaled on a golden sceptre set with a pearl. The dragon watches with a wary dark green eye, a hallmark of the golden chimeras Carter, Howe created. Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1900.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Collie-Reverse-Intaglio-Stickpin-J9049.htm"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 249px; height: 241px;" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Collie-Reverse-Intaglio-Stickpin-J9049-1744.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><b>Border Collie</b></a></div><p>A vigilant border collie watches from within a dome of rock crystal. The pooch is beautifully sculpted with a finely detailed coat, whiskers and soulful eyes. The miniature masterpiece was created by an artist meticulously carving the image into the reverse of a polished dome of rock crystal. Then, using brushes as small as a single hair, the collie was carefully painted with fine, lifelike details. Crafted in 18kt gold, circa 1880.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Whiteside-and-Blank-Egyptian-Revival-Stickpin-J9033.htm"><img height="240" alt="Egyptian Revival stickpin set with a luminous pearl. A dramatic example of the beautiful Egyptian Revival jewels created in the early 1900s. Victorian and later jewelry makers often found inspiration in the jewels and designs of ancient civilizations. Created by Whiteside & Blank in 14kt gold, circa 1910.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Brassler-Bloodstone-Stickpin-J9060.htm"><img height="245" alt="Brassler bloodstone stickpin. The early Arts & Crafts movement drew significant inspiration from the craftsmanship and designs of the Middle Ages. The cruciform-shape of the stickpin and bloodstone reflect the Victorian interest in the symbols and spirituality of the earlier period. Created by The Brassler Company in 14kt gold, circa 1910.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Winged-Serpent-Stickpin-J8992.htm"><img height="245" alt="Winged serpent stickpin with pearl. The charming little fellow is the perfect miniature gargoyle to keep demons and goblins from a lapel or tie. The rich detail of the stickpin is a nice example of the fully modeled, sculpture-like miniature jewels of the period. Beautifully crafted by Whiteside & Blank in 14kt gold, circa 1900.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Horse-Head-Stickpin-J9056.htm"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 246px; height: 192px;" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Horse-Head-Stickpin-J9056-2123.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><b>Equestrian</b></a></div><p>During the mid Victorian period (circa 1860) through the 1920s, equestrian and hunt-related jewelry were all the rage. This beautifully designed stickpin features an energetic, alert horse with a small red stone (likely a garnet) set as the eye. The dramatic, richly detailed design of the horse suggests the stickpin was created during the Art Deco era of the 1920s and 1930s. Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1925.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Whiteside-Moonstone-and-Pearl-Stickpin-J9073.htm"><img height="249" alt="A laurel wreath and moonstone stickpin. The laurel wreath is exquisitely crafted and finely detailed. The moonstone is complemented by a small white pearl set below. Created by Whiteside & Blank in 14kt gold, circa 1900.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Oak-Leaf-and-Acorns-Enamel-Stickpin-J9074.htm"><img height="255" alt="Enamel oak leaf and acorn stickpin. Possibly created by Krementz & Company in 18kt and 14kt gold, circa 1900. </p><br /><p>Stickpins have been described as miniature sculptures set atop shafts of gold. When custom creating a jewel I often draw inspiration from the designs and craftsmanship of jewels created in the past. While the jewels we create are modern and adapted to the client's taste, they are rooted in a timeless tradition of elegant design and fine craftsmanship.</p><p>I am always amazed by the great diversity of designs that can be found among antique jewels. This is especially true of the cufflinks created during the early decades of the last century. Below is a holiday sampling of late Victorian and Jazz Age cufflinks from our <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Antique-Cufflinks-Gallery.htm">Antique Cufflink Gallery</a>.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Carrington-Engraved-MOP-Dress-Set-J9096.htm"><img src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Carrington-Pearl-and-Engraved-MOP-Dress-Set-J9096-3109.jpg" width="373" height="385" alt="Carrington engraved mother-of-pearl dress set. As so often happens, some of the prettiest ornaments are not on our tree or hanging in the windows. They are sparkling in the antique jewelry showcase.</p><p>When custom creating jewels for clients I often look to jewels from the past for inspiration. Jewelry from earlier times was often beautifully crafted and can be found in an incredible variety of styles. Here are a few of my favorite brooches and pins from the late Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras. These and other fine antique jewels can be found in the <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Antique-and-Estate-Jewelry-Gallery.htm">Antique and Estate Jewelry Gallery</a>.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Carter-Howe-Serpent-and-Acanthus-Brooch-J9069.htm"><img border="0" alt="Victorian serpent and acanthus leaf brooch. In fact, of all the colors of sapphire (and there are many varied hues throughout the color spectrum), Blue is by far the most popular.</p><p>The cut of this exceptional sapphire is also quite special. Sapphires are typically cut in cushion shapes and sometimes round and oval shapes, especially when the crystal is cut in a major cutting center like Thailand. Radiant cuts are not a common style of cut for sapphire due to the extra weight loss of crystal and the more exacting skill required for this shape. When you see a nice radiant cut, such as this 1.838 carats gem sapphire, you know it is very special indeed. This gem was recut from a larger cushion shape to allow for better proportions, brilliance and color.</p><p>You could find another sapphire for less money, but then again, why would you want something of lesser quality. If you want only the finest.....this rich sapphire is the one for you.</p><p>Sapphire is the hardest of all the colored gemstones, sitting at a whopping 9 on the Moh's scale of hardness, which makes this gemstone perfect for daily wear. It is no wonder that sapphires are the most preferred colored gemstone for clients asking us to custom design an engagement ring featuring something other than a traditional diamond.</p></b><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Pastel-Radiant-Sapphire-Breathless-Ring.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 450px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 169px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Pastel-Radiant-Sapphire-Breathless-Ring-3b.gif" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><strong> Custom Ring with 1.51 carat Radiant-cut Sapphire</strong></span></div><br /><p><strong>Radiant cut sapphires are special. Like the classic couples of the 1930s and 40s - remember Astaire and Rogers ... Bogart and Bacall - they are striking and always make a statement. Here are a few of my favorite Sapphire and Diamond rings.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Sapphire-Sensation-Platinum-Ring-II.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 450px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 254px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Sapphire-Sensation-Platinum-Ring-II-5b.gif" border="0" /></a></div><p>The bold look and elegant lines of this beautiful emerald-cut Sapphire begged for an Art Deco design. To complement the Sapphire I selected two elongated obelisk-shape diamonds (bullet cuts) and bezel set them in platinum. The unusual cut of the diamonds is echoed in the tapered prongs securing the Sapphire and the raised center-line of the platinum band. The ring is an homage to Egyptian Revival and Art Deco eras, two of my favorite sources of design inspiration.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Sapphire-Delight-Ring.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 450px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 206px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Cushion-Sapphire-Delight-Ring9.gif" border="0" /></a></div><p>While Art Deco design emphasizes the beauty of geometric lines and dramatic angles, the above cushion-cut Sapphire suggests other possibilities. Accented with trilliant cut diamonds, the gently curved edges and softened corners of the rich blue Sapphire invite the viewer to get lost in a deep pool of cool crystalline water. The beautiful Sapphire is set in an example of our <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Sapphire-Delight-Ring.htm">Sapphire Delight design</a>.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Sapphire-Luminosity-Ring.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 450px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 275px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Sapphire-Luminosity-Ring-5b.gif" border="0" /></a></div><p>This ring is named <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Sapphire-Luminosity-Ring.htm">Sapphire Luminosity</a>. It incorporates a clear, steely blue Sapphire that luminesces with a shimmering cool blue light. Accenting the oval Sapphire are six baguette diamonds dramatically set into the shoulders of the ring. In the gallery we call this staggered arrangement of the diamonds a "Rockefeller". The name is inspired by the soaring skyscrapers of Rockefeller Center, the Art Deco icon in New York City.</p><br /><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Cushion-Sapphire-Engraved-Elegance-Ring-J8750-sr.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 375px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 348px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Cushion-Sapphire-Engraved-Elegance-Ring-J8750-16.gif" border="0" /></a> <p>Hand engraving is a classic technique that beautifully complements Sapphires and diamonds. This hand-crafted platinum ring has a wonderful late Edwardian/early Art Deco feel that captures the elegance of a bygone era. Note the gentle millgraining that highlights the edges of the setting and band. When creating a ring there are <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Engraved-Rings-Gallery.htm">many varieties of hand engraving</a> from which to choose.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Sapphire-Hidden-Treasures-Ring-J8751.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 450px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 207px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Sapphire-Hidden-Treasures-Ring-J8751-29a.gif" border="0" /></a></div><br /><p>Not all Sapphire rings wear their diamonds on the side. This striking ring features a round Sapphire set in a variation of our <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Sapphire-Hidden-Treasures-Ring-J8751.htm">Hidden Treasures</a> design. The Sapphire is set with a prong style known as "French Double prongs". The up sweeping shoulders of the platinum ring are creased with a gentle valley and the edges accented with milgraining. As can be seen in the picture below, two diamonds are nestled between the upper and lower gallery of the setting, hence the name "Hidden Treasures".</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Sapphire-Hidden-Treasures-Ring-J8751.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 482px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Sapphire-Hidden-Treasures-Ring-J8751-37a.gif" border="0" /></a></div><p>On either side of the hidden diamonds, small circlets of yellow gold are set in the split shoulders of the upswept band. The golden accents offer a striking contrast to the cool white and blue of the diamonds, Sapphire and platinum. It is these little touches that really make a ring pop.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Rounded-Cushion-Sapphire-Breathless-Ring.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 450px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 183px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Rounded-Cushion-Sapphire-Breathless-Ring1.gif" border="0" /></a></div><p>Our <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Rounded-Cushion-Sapphire-Breathless-Ring.htm">Breathless Rings</a> are a contemporary take on a classic design ... our interpretation of a traditional three-stone ring set with beautiful gemstones and diamonds. This example showcases a soft cushion-shape royal blue Sapphire and round colorless diamonds. The platinum band is gently tapered as it approaches the gemstones. The style is a timeless classic that will surely be enjoyed for many generations. Often when creating a new ring, we like to start with the classics and add a little pizzazz !</p><p align="center">These are just a few of my favorite Sapphire and diamond rings. The ring was crafted in anticipation of a complementing future wedding band. Well the wedding band is done!</p><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Scintillating-Diamond-Ring-dr.htm"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 196px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353265959808572562" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj76R9jddUNSNxsklZAUql4M0F_zfYYcrYmre_marpNJB1Ml97dOnIzgh4voRJ5nE_C4Jr5xbdfac3eP9gmFWtmqlC0NqqoP0lQBk6HCi8BnCnnyovX2dq1fU4hcwxjTkmBjzaepOtQvQVx/s400/Scintillating-360-Band1.gif" /></a><strong><span style="font-size:78%;">Scintillating 360 custom-designed wedding band.</span></strong></div><br /><p>The custom-designed band features 25 round brilliant-cut diamonds set around its entire circumference. The bead-set diamonds are neatly nestled between two crisp, milligrained edges. So no matter how the ring rolls and moves on the finger, you will always see a scintillating display of brilliant white diamonds. We have nicknamed the design Scintillating 360.</p><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Scintillating-Diamond-Ring-dr.htm"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 347px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353268207356627890" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgust-Ovx7Q9ftsWulmEK_b62l5QGz2swn12LzPIp0wCGASJrjoIhO7DwdW94jQOCJWaN0UCtrPgkf-k49G1mnAFlD4lmGwsoudTnCkATuO_zYzPEYz7Yi7Wte47rtXf8ZbNi4hB2804X8-/s400/Scintillating-360-set1.gif" /></a><strong><span style="font-size:78%;">Custom engagement ring and wedding band.</span></strong></div><br /><p>We matched the shapes and profiles of the two rings so they would fit snugly against each other. On the engagement ring, the prongs were masterfully tapered in shape and thickness then tucked in beneath the diamond for a narrower profile. This allowed the diamond to be set at a traditional height, slightly above the height of the band, and still have the base of the setting narrower than the width of the band.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Scintillating-Diamond-Ring-dr.htm"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 366px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353271088281882578" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9wmSeGRHCDn6zZ_krw9repnG_mP2f4yKJ-iZGzieYr3z1bUStCjrGaXMa4sBo6Q-OgyOBcsq0wVhU7ciucY0nX2YNqoUpjvNZcLg318YQ6TYbcr7hUlFVFSIraFp6nu-cswVI3tDj56oR/s400/Scintillating-360-set3.gif" /></a><strong><span style="font-size:78%;">A scintillating collection of diamonds.</span></strong></div><br /><p>One of the important steps in creating the wedding band was matching the 25 brilliant diamonds for color, cut and clarity. The goal was ensure the diamonds presented a uniform appearance and perfectly complemented the diamonds in the engagement ring. The result was a success - a scintillating array of sparkling white diamonds.</p>Judi Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08078252362286743473noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7080921933069194070.post-26173033851039021902009-05-25T12:03:00.000-04:002009-05-27T13:39:35.575-04:00Scintillating Diamonds<a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Scintillating-Diamond-Ring.htm"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339793279258741938" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 176px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkJWCsWplqTznZqUIWJQy4XfBggGEcetBloakSYniu3-OG80dYOfzJjSVEmt_lnQHZ9S3ZEhnZ4bLJkyrW33a1NksDO5igXnHaCakDWHgg_V_y5GAGu_h4PDE5NSXgxZ_LTCOVqh4PgkVT/s400/Scintillating-Diamonds3.gif" border="0" /></a><br /><div align="center"><em><strong>Scintillate - To throw off sparks. The prongs are crafted from half round wire that was tapered in gauge from top to base. </p><p>The challenge was to create a secure setting for the diamond that would also allow a straight or non-contoured wedding band to fit flush against the ring. Therefore, I made the base of the setting narrow to accomplish a smaller profile. The graceful curve of the prongs is complemented by the gentle upsweep of the shoulders of the ring. Because this ring was custom designed and hand crafted, each of the design elements was created to best match and complement the beauty of the diamonds and meet the client's wishes. </p><p><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Scintillating-Diamond-Ring.htm"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339796372253558050" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 186px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0tLGz_lYsKNN_GTe7kodEukamDe9agn_PM8obXdZQmRlE6dw8ddc-hNGgjKynKGtdhfdJVOy4kInwrZaCBG_f2E-tnydKlqF9txJYs2JZ1gbOWiibmhT9uPWX-8EeAt25sG4KUoq0UU0h/s400/Scintillating-Diamonds5.gif" border="0" /></a><br /></p><p>My goal is always to create the perfect balance between beauty, functionality and durablity. The gemstone's rich, velvety blue/violet color with flashes of red is reminiscent of lightning in a late evening sky.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Tanzanite-Gemstone-1.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 147px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 193px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Tanzanite-Gemstone-1-but.gif" border="0" /></a></div><p>Ever since Tanzanite was first discovered in the 1960s, this exotic gemstone has tantalized with its incredibly beautiful colors. To help you decide if Tanzanite is a good choice for your next custom jewel, I answer the following commonly asked questions about this wonderful gemstone.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Tango-Tanzanite-and-Diamond-Ring.htm"><img height="135" alt="Tanzanite and diamond custom platinum ring." src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Tango-Tanzanite-and-Diamond-Ring-but.gif" width="148" border="0" /></a></div><br /><p><strong>Are Tanzanites a "soft" gemstone?</strong></p><p>Although not as hard as Sapphires and Diamonds, Tanzanites are fine when properly set in jewelry. Because it is not as hard, Tanzanite is more susceptible to scratches, but common sense precautions will protect and preserve the beauty of this striking gemstone.</p><p>For example, you should not wear your Tanzanite ring while working in the garden. Of course, you should also remove your Sapphire and Diamond rings when engaged in activities that might lead to a nick or scratch. When not being worn Tanzanite and other jewelry should be stored in individual cloth pouches, so that the gemstones do not inadvertently abraded each other.</p><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Trillium-Tanzanite-and-Diamond-Ring.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 450px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 220px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Trillium-Tanzanite-and-Diamond-Ring-6.gif" border="0" /></a></div><p>Proper jewelry design can also mitigate the risk to your Tanzanite. Tanzanite is often set in less exposed, less active, pieces of jewelry, like earrings and pendants. When setting Tanzanite in a ring it is best to choose a low setting that will help protect the gemstone while showing off its brilliant color. Bezel settings are a wonderful option for setting Tanzanites.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Tanzanite-Flower-Ring.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 148px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 166px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Tanzanite-Flower-Ring-but.gif" border="0" /></a></div><br /><p><strong>Are Tanzanites becoming rarer?</strong></p><p>For all its beauty fine Tanzanite is found in only one place in the world - an inaccessible mine lying in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Over-mining, flooding and cave-ins at the mine site have limited the supply of higher quality, larger gems. As the popularity of Tanzanite has increased, the scarcity and cost of finer Tanzanites has risen. But, be aware that not all Tanzanites are equally fine or scarce.</p><p>There is an abundant supply of lower quality Tanzanites, often with pale or grayish color and small in size. Commonly offered on home shopping channels and at discount jewelers, these lesser Tanzanites lack the beauty and pizzazz of the finer stones. Be careful! I have seen lower quality Tanzanites offered at the same price as finer gemstones.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Tanzanite-Crystal.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 148px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 185px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Tanzanite-Crystal-but.gif" border="0" /></a></div><br /><p><strong>Are the striking colors of Tanzanite natural?</strong></p><p>Tanzanite is a natural gemstone whose color is enhanced during cutting by a process called "heat treating". When found in nature, Tanzanite crystals are usually a reddish-brown color. The gemstone crystals are heated in order to bring out the rich blue, purple and violet colors we love. The color change is permanent.</p><p>A similar heat-treating process has been used for thousands of years to enhance the color of Rubies and Sapphires. If a jeweler or salesperson does not inform you about the heat treatment of Tanzanites and other gemstones, you should probably not be working with them.</p><p>There are several man-made and natural materials that simulate the appearance of Tanzanite. One, known as synthetic Fosterite, is grown in a lab and is worth significantly less than Tanzanite. Other gemstones may be treated with films or other agents in an effort approximate the beautiful color of fine Tanzanite. Because these materials may be misrepresented as Tanzanite, it is best to only work with a knowledgeable, reputable seller with a background in gemology. You may want to have your Tanzanite evaluated by a qualified independent gemologist.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Tanzanite-Engraved-Ring-tr.htm"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 450px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 205px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/graphics/Tanzanite-French-Elegance-Ring-3.gif" border="0" /></a></div><br /><p align="center">Please visit our <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Tanzanite-Rings-Gallery.htm">Tanzanite Ring Gallery</a> where we feature<br>more of the Tanzanite jewels we have created.</p>Judi Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08078252362286743473noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7080921933069194070.post-42805213900376622592009-02-11T16:36:00.000-05:002009-04-17T08:35:46.804-04:00Red Spinel - The Finished Jewel<p></p><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Red-Spinel-Promise-Ring.htm"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301024416556830162" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 257px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3suMmZE5jNNia_RL1y9a64vgUdez0mD2a5ep-mFWNQc4Wg3Wz-DxHDsBeYAqh0_0QO9Ri99gUa7mQ4hI3MoqYjfbD35sp4aHLjGhXl3SjwZnbeXgYtwNVpDhI8sHQWOsRxIraMnaP_8fJ/s400/Round-Red-Spinel-Promise9b.gif" border="0" /></a><br /><p>In my last post I wrote about some of the beautiful Red Spinels for which I am currently designing jewelry. In this post I will illustrate some of lovely rings I have custom designed for this fiery red natural gemstone. </p><p>The above ring is based on my <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Red-Spinel-Promise-Ring.htm">Platinum Promise design </a>and features a 1.90 carats round brilliant cut pinkish-Red spinel and ideal cut diamonds. The ideal cut round side diamonds are a perfect match to the center red spinel. I chose all platinum for this ring since this particular spinel has a crisp, cool shade of red.</p><br /><p><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Red-Spinel-Trellis-Ring-J7243.htm"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301025191883222594" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 241px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhteOsAjzPBx07o2w6r_Kt9KgRD4IsZUKda7Gksiuu8GlR-q55imzawpwo_gHLz6oe51t4fQop4d8fklMbmd1XNCSM1k5J0TjLv_KO_F4SxiOLFsCjfX2oDoQYBLwC5PAVuJM42hriITXdg/s400/Red-Spinel-Trellis-Ring-J7243-5.gif" border="0" /></a>In this next ring, based on my <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Red-Spinel-Trellis-Ring-J7243.htm">Trellis design</a>, I feature a traditional cushion shaped deep red Spinel, set horizontally in platinum prongs with an 18kt rose gold double band. The pinkish cast of the rose gold nicely complements the rich hue of this fire-engine like Red Spinel.</p><br /><p><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Regal-Red-Spinel-Engraved-Ring.htm"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301026807431472130" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 152px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3QlEvkS2P48ELl6XwFgY6-Wd5YC357SOQr87v5nHqnG3Yha4X04ibXok6Q0DfHlRIzBcVH9hOYqYO8WNRT8Py4R_I9gmLaNQpjoKTQxbcoxZ0FRztNGmEZCd33cv7KQ1MUlhEwlDojtCr/s400/Trillium-Regal-Red3.gif" border="0" /></a>Some time ago I purchased a wonderful pair of larger trillium cut Red Spinels and decided to split the pair and use the gems in different rings. I set one in my <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Regal-Red-Spinel-Engraved-Ring.htm">Platinum Regal Elegance design </a>and liked it so much that I created a rose gold version with the sister stone.</p><br /><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Rosy-Regal-Red-Spinel-Ring.htm"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301027845292032642" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 339px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibkfoK2__Jp-KgvyHuE-eZz83nHSBX1bbgX_ZDME2ryoQDi_n4UkySO-8sbpB8grpUEltRKd7xldVebXW9DJbdfXjVFMKHzYIlyOHmU-MG1j2LJgZks3INPlpONkHTYPKI_4vb9hpnG0Bw/s400/Rosy-Regal-Red13.gif" border="0" /></a><br /><p>So whether you prefer the cool white of Platinum or the warmth of Rose Gold, we have it covered with both versions, featuring red spinel. In fact, it is one of my favorite gemstones. Those of you who have read my earlier posts may have already guessed this.</p><p>Most often I enter the gemstone markets to help clients acquire the perfect gemstone for a custom design project. But, I also acquire exceptional gemstones for my own interest and as inspiration when creating new designs. And, of course, a number of trusted gem cutters know to always call me when they are cutting something extraordinary. <em>The little tempters!</em> :-)</p><p>Here are some of the gorgeous Red, Pink and Flame Spinels I have recently acquired and the jewelry designs I am considering.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/cat-ear.htm"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300660233594437266" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 344px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6579Kpx1832RAAyn_NnITE_SBKQQkoWuv6ZZSbs8DBk1Th7Q9qkqwm-Jo6aY7V1Nz-lqv-pM9mzU6U6NUPu6TbrnBvA2w6wlxYQ_HWsoSAD5jFTNukjCf-V-J6PONocZO7NT5xsve9zGj/s400/CS2791-243cttw-Emerald-Cut-Red-Spinels1e.gif" border="0" /></a></div><br /><p><span style="font-family:georgia;">This matching pair of emerald-cut Red Spinels is exceptional. I was originally drawn to their stunning vibrant shade of red and beautiful elongated shape. I imagine them set in elegant Art Deco-style earrings crafted in warm 18kt gold or platinum with drops of colored diamonds. </span></p><br /><p>Or possibly an Art Deco-inspired ring set with a large emerald-cut diamond and the two Red Spinels along the sides. The bold shoulders of the ring could be lightened with piercing and accented with gold or platinum filigree work.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Ring-Design-Portfolio.htm"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300659858539703538" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 250px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 241px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUnD1lLWvxFlYeAtjXiZs0WYhb-clnk_zLvZUmrUw3abxkZ5WRLoNjGKOdT90noHRYTnrOPKZrpenpDAEmAMCmRPloAdgPnxoJfLWee3vWRY6aq4C2lVj1r7r3fwNoecv443aooM4uUQii/s400/1.79-Round-Red-Spinel-CS5046-1d.gif" border="0" /></a></div><br /><p>When you work closely with beautiful gemstones they often take on a personality. And, of course, I cannot resist giving each of the gemstones nicknames. This dazzling 1.79-carat round Red Spinel reminds me of a glowing red moon in the summer night sky. I just imagine it rising above the horizon on a sultry July evening. So naturally, this gem has become known as "The Red Moon."</p><p>This Spinel's rich red hue, classic round cut and brilliant faceting suggest a striking ring. I imagine a variation of our <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Tsavorite-Secret-Garden-Ring-eng.htm">Secret Garden design</a> with fancy cut diamonds and dramatic hand engraving. Or maybe a classic platinum pendant with a brightly engraved bale and gallery set with small sparkling diamonds. Something along the lines of the <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Trillium-Benitoite-Elegance-Pendant.htm">Benitoite pendant</a> we created several years ago for a client in California.</p><p>One of the fun things about being a jewelry designer is that beautiful gemstones always inspire a multiplicity design possibilities.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Engraved-Rings-Gallery.htm"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300659997249489314" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 250px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 309px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo7c8lEVQR8Nn2x4ci4uWnBbJIEC7muIzeFwBic3vBty8mP9fRXicu-iU1JmhvS2tEzQUxT1fmM2wwuNeP2hXZaGLk0shoXkV0Dvb-S2ddVWOy1ZXhQSjOO-RUqdTBFqboyFBl0uGrPqtW/s400/Elongated-Trillium-Red-Spinel1e.gif" border="0" /></a></div><br /><p>When viewing Red Spinels I always first consider the color and the shape. Red Spinels are most often cut as cushion-shapes or rounds. This elongated trillium (triangle shape) and the beautiful matching pair of emerald-cuts shown earlier are more unusual shapes and present exciting design opportunities.</p><p>This trillium is a vibrant shade of red electrified with flashes of pink and orange. Fine Spinel has a bright, crystalline appearance that allows for amazing, subtle interplays of color. This 1.30-carat gem is a mesmerizing example. I am currently "playing" with design ideas to showcase the gem's unique shape and color. Perhaps a variation of our <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/Regal-Red-Spinel-Engraved-Ring.htm">Regal Elegance design</a>.</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/catalog/cat-cust.htm"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300660398290220754" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 180px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 167px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD7zVfsGiWFrWt4ybtZwIw-vo5k5ZmP1jWFSPMR5Yewx5MEpiUBMnwSsDSdjwshnVW-ayj9A30vc4E0U-O4Z4F3mPmiFF2q09gzKPrH2od_gQOSLOKUElq4IbHw7SRrR2D27Wpxcc0Z8Ul/s400/CS7173-230-Squatty-Cushion-Flame-Spinel1e.gif" border="0" /></a></div><br /><p>Last but not least is this classic cushion-shape Red Spinel. Like the previous trillium, the color of the Spinel is a rich red hue with strong flashes of pink and orange. Because of the strong flashes of secondary orange and pink hues, this variety is known as "Flame Spinel". Another beautiful gemstone and, of course, the beginning of another beautiful jewel!</p><p>If you enjoy the rich reds of Rubies, you should consider Red Spinels. The color of Red Spinels is often more crystaline and clearer than Rubies which can be a hazy, sultry red. Fine examples of both gemstones are beautiful, but in different ways. Red Spinel offers a great design alternative.</p><p>In my next post, I will share some of the custom rings we have created featuring Red Spinels. Until then, let mek now what you think. How sould you set these vibrant gemstones?</p><br /><p align="center" aling="center">To view more beautiful gems and the custom rings we have created, please visit our <a href="http://www.jewelryexpert.com/">Jewelry Gallery</a>.</p><br /><p></p><br /></span>Judi Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08078252362286743473noreply@blogger.com5
